The first film this semester is an interesting documentary called "The Singing Revolution". The movie makers themselves have described it as an inspiring account of one nation's dramatic rebirth.
Most people don’t think about singing when they think about revolutions. But song was the weapon of choice when, between 1987 and 1991, Estonians sought to free themselves from decades of Soviet occupation. During those years, hundreds of thousands gathered in public to sing forbidden patriotic songs and to rally for independence. If Hollywood made this story up, no one would believe it. And yet this story of hope, non-violence, and perseverance has been playing to standing ovations in theatres across the country.
Come and enjoy it with some Estonian snacks. It will give you a great insight for the semester here in Estonia! After the movie we will have a short discussion round with someone from the movie- a famous Estonian conductor – Hirvo Surva! So don’t miss a chance to meet him!
