Her work has been characterrized as naļve,sweet, humorous, ironical, entertaining, conceptual, sincere, delicate, multilayered and audience friendly.Kivelä’s style is not ostentatious and serious – her work involves a great deal of warmth and humanity.
Dance Theatre Zick
Dance Theatre Zick was created in the fall of 2005 when Anu Ruusmaa’s dance performance“Solitude – It Does Not Matter at All” was brought on stage in NO99 big auditorium. From then on Zick has staged several theatrical and movement based
contemporary dance performances and become a persistently active dance theatre with a stable core group. The aim of Dance Theatre Zick is to concentrate dance artists who think alike and as a result of that cooperation create full - length dance performances that fill the evening. The last performance from Dance Theater Zick was “Forgotten Poetry”.The soon to be staged “Ballroom for Beginners” is the eighth performance from Zick.
About the performance
“Ballroom for Beginners”reminds us of the times, when only the lucky ones managed to buy wieners under the counter, those even luckier got colorful stuff from the foreign currency shops –chewing gum and chocolate, which looked like a miracle –and the luckiest got to go overseas and visit the dreamland themselves. The performance tells the story of Estonians’ dreams of Finland and memories from the time, when everything outside the borders of out tiny country seemed to be a beautiful intangible dream. But how do we remember those old times?Do we mostly remember the good or the bad?And what happens when we remind ourselves how we felt all those years ago?How do those old dreams and memories blend into one another? Where does the reality end and the fantasy begin?
“Ballroom for Beginners” is a fantasy about the past. It tells us story about a time, when everything was so different. So different, that it is even hard to explain. So what is this story about?
